Plug Computing

Trend | 2009. 2. 27. 12:58 | Posted by MissionFromGod

Network Chip을 전문으로 만들어 공급하는 미국 Marvell사에서 새로운 아이디어 제품을 내 놓았군요.

"SheevaPlug"

SoC(System On Chip)

A Better Way to Deliver Value Added Services

With the rise in broadband users, people continue to consume and share increasing amounts of digital content each year. The time and money invested in personal photos, home movies and in content purchased digitally is significant and continues to grow. Network connected consumer electronics devices, smart phones and social websites have emerged to help consumers share and access their personal content in the home and over the Internet. With the growth in digital content, there is a need for services to secure, manage and share content simply and reliably.

Today digital home services such as
media servers, file sharing and backup software all need to be installed on a PC. A plug computer is a small, powerful computer that connects to an existing network using Gigabit Ethernet. This type of device eliminates the need for an always-on PC in the digital home to access these services.

Marvell Plug Computer Aesthetics and Components

Designed from the ground up to simplify the management of digital media assets, the Marvell plug computer is designed to be left plugged into a wall socket at all times. The plug uses low power to conserve energy and draws on average, less than five watts under normal operation compared to 25-100 watts for a PC being used as a home server.

The platform is built using Marvell's Kirkwood series system-on-chip (SoC) design with a 1.2GHz Marvell Sheeva™ CPU processor equipped, 512Mbytes of FLASH and 512Mbytes of DRAM. The plug also features a 2.0 USB port to allow users to run applications that require a hard disk or other peripheral.

Efficiency without Compromise

Unlike other embedded networking products, a plug computer is designed to offer PC-like performance. The plug computer simplifies the porting of existing applications and the development of new ones. From the Marvell Kirkwood series, the high performance Sheeva™ processor allows the interfaces to operate at wire-speed so that users don't see a decrease in performance when using a plug instead of a PC. Ample FLASH and DRAM, permits the use of more standard Linux distributions for faster development.

The Plug Computer is an inexpensive computer solution that has the technology and advancements to run a service on its own. This allows a software service to be bundled together with a plug computer and provides a simple deployment model for a consumer or small business. Specialized plug computers can be targeted at different market segments allowing vendors to clearly communicate the value proposition and deliver the optimal installation and use for the consumer. Consumers can use the plug for media sharing or for backup services. The convenient compact form factor of a plug computer promotes an energy efficient design and simplifies installation.
